Encryption and Decryption of Passwords

Option 1: Use a fixed encryption key

The first option to encrypt a password is to use a fixed encryption key which can be defined by Jira administrators. The idea behind that is that every team can define their own encryption key so that every team member has access to all passwords which are encrypted with the defined key. If you use fixed encryption keys, every created password will automatically be encrypted with the defined key.

To enable the fixed encryption key, navigate to the configuration screen of your field and click on Edit Fixed Encryption Key:

Enter your encryption key in the text field and save it by clicking on the button.

Use case: By providing password custom fields in Jira Service Desk while enabling the fixed encryption key your Service Desk Customers can enter passwords that will automatically be encrypted. Therefore you can use this configuration to provide a secure way of data exchange.

Option 2: Use custom encryption keys

For this way of encryption, you don't have to configure the field but need to think about an encryption key you want to use. This can, for example, be a combination of other field values, so that other users who know about the logic of encryption can have access to the password.

Step 1: Create a Jira issue that include your password custom field

Step 2: Enter the text you want to us to encrypt the password = your encryption key.

Step 3: Enter the password, that should be encrypted.

Step 4: Save the password issue:

To encrypt the password, just enter the encryption key in the issue view or edit screen and click on the lock:
