Create and manage Attributes

Create and manage Attributes

You can open the attributes management page by selecting the “Attributes” item from the left sidebar. Here you can easily create and manage your attributes .

Only users who have the “Permission to manage Attributes” app permission will be able to create, edit, archive or delete attributes.

By default, the Attributes page can be opened by any user and every attribute is visible for them.

If a user does not have permission to create or edit, a message will be visible to inform them.

There are three separate tabs on the attributes page:

  • Active: Here, all attributes will be listed that are selectable in the attributes picker and assignable to worklogs. These attributes can be used for reporting, which means these are available as filter options, columns, or group by options on the Reports page.

  • Archived: Here, all attributes will be listed that are not selectable in the attribute picker and are not assignable to worklogs. These attributes can also be used when creating a report.

  • All: All attributes will be listed here, active and archived as well.

Creating attributes

You can create new attributes based on your needs.

To create a new attribute, click on the “New Attribute” button in the upper right corner and provide the following:

  • Attribute name (required): The attribute name will be visible to the users when creating a worklog or a report.

  • Description (optional): The attribute’s description provides more info about its use.

  • Type: The type of the attribute you want to create.

  • Required: You can set an attribute as required to create worklogs. (Checkbox (Toggle) type attributes cannot be required.)

Attribute types

You can create these types of attributes:

  • Text input: Allows users to enter any free text in the field, within a defined character limit.

  • Number input: Allows users to enter only numeric values (integer or decimal), within a defined character limit.

  • Checkbox (Toggle): Allows users to enable or disable the option by switching the toggle on or off.

  • Single select dropdown: Allows users to choose one option from a predefined list (from up to 100 available options).

Managing attributes

You can do the following actions with the existing attributes in the list:

  • Required: You can set an attribute as required to create worklogs. (Checkbox (Toggle) type attributes cannot be required.)

  • Edit: Update attribute name, description, or color.

  • Archive: Archived attributes are not selectable in the attribute picker but remain reportable. The archive works well if an attribute is still relevant in reports, but you don’t want to use it for new worklogs.

  • Delete: Delete the attribute permanently. An attribute won’t be selectable for worklogs or for report filters and it will be removed from every worklog in Jira.

Re-ordering attributes

You can rearrange the attributes on the management page.
They will appear to users in the same order on the Log Work and Edit Work screens.
