First Template Creation
Welcome to Your First Step in Streamlining Issue Creation
This guide will walk you through the basics of creating a new template from scratch.
Step 1: Access the Template Library
All template management happens in the Template Library. To access it select Issue Templates from the drop-down menu under your user profile icon (top-right corner of Jira).
Step 2: Open the ‘Create Template’ dialogue
Once you’re in the Template Library, look for the Create Template
button in the top-right corner of the page. Click it to begin.
Step 3: Fill Out Template Details
In the Create Template dialog, you’ll see several tabs in the left sibedar. Let’s start with the first one - Details. Let’s go through the input fields here one by one:
Name (required): Enter a unique, descriptive name. You’ll be able to search for the template using this name as a keyword.
Icon: Pick an icon and color to represent your template. This helps visually distinguish your template in the library.
Description: Provide a short note or hint about what this template does.
Viewers: When you create a new template, its visibility is set to Private by default. To learn more about template permissions, see Template Visibility and Permissions.
Step 4: Choose the Issue Creation Process
Below the name and description, you’ll see a checkbox:
If enabled: The standard Jira “Create issue” screen will appear whenever you use this template, letting you confirm or edit fields.
If disabled: Issues will be created automatically in the background. This is great for full automation (less clicking, but less chance to review).
Note: By default the checkbox is unchecked.
Step 5: Configure Default Fields
Now, we get to the core of what makes templates so useful: pre-filling issue fields with default values. Default values in issue templates allow you to pre-fill specific fields with predefined content whenever a new issue is created using the template.
For the complete list of supported fields, see page Supported Fields .
In the Default values tab of the dialog, you can set values for system and custom fields.
Summary (required): Every issue in Jira needs a summary. Enter a default summary that best describes issues created from this template.
Epic Name (if you select Epic as the Issue Type): Jira requires an Epic Name for epics. Make sure you set one here if you’re creating an epic-based template.
…Add More Fields!
Use the Add field dropdown to include more fields (Description, Assignee, Due Date, etc.).
Note: Only fields associated with the current project will be available for selection.
Tip: Check whether the create screen for your chosen issue type has any required fields. If so, you must provide default values for those fields in this template—otherwise, the issue cannot be created successfully.
That’s it! Once you’ve filled in the details and configured your default fields, click Save. Your template is now ready for use.
