CSV Export: Special characters encoding

When exporting data from Jira Software as a CSV (Comma-Separated Values) file and opening it in Excel, users may encounter issues where non-English characters appear distorted or garbled. This problem is not caused by Excel's default encoding settings. By default, Excel opens the CSV file with ANSI encoding, while STAGIL Tables are exported using UTF-8.

Workaround

Exported CSV files can be opened in Jira correctly in a variety of ways. The most straightforward one is described in the steps below:

  1. Launch Microsoft Excel on your computer.

  2. Import Data from Text:

    • Click on the "Data" tab in the Excel ribbon menu.

    • Choose "From Text/CSV" or "Get External Data" > "From Text" (Excel 2016) or "Get & Transform Data" > "From Text/CSV" (Excel 2019 and later).

  3. Locate and Select the CSV File

  4. Choose File Origin Encoding

  5. Specify Delimiter and Data Formatting

  6. Click "Finish" or "Load" to import the data.
